This plant is a rare and highly sought-after variety of Alocasia baginda, one of the most stunning houseplants you can add to your collection. With its textured, scale-like leaves in a silvery-white hue and contrasting dark green veins, this plant truly lives up to its mythical name.

Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Dragonscale Albo has captured the hearts of indoor gardeners for its dramatic, head-turning foliage.

While its beauty may suggest it’s difficult to care for, the Dragonscale Albo simply requires attention to specific needs that mimic its natural environment. Here are three expert tips to help you care for this rare gem and keep it thriving in your home.

How to care for a Dragonscale Albo

The Dragonscale Albo is part of the Alocasia family, known for their unique foliage and tropical origins. Like many Alocasias, this plant thrives in warm, humid conditions and requires proper light and watering to maintain its health and beauty. Follow these three essential tips to ensure your Dragonscale Albo remains vibrant and healthy.

TIP #1 Provide bright, indirect light and consistent warmth

The Dragonscale Albo thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain the striking contrast and color of its leaves. Direct sunlight, however, can scorch the delicate foliage, so avoid placing it in harsh sun.

‘Position your Dragonscale Albo near a window with filtered light or use sheer curtains to diffuse the sunlight,’ recommends Lisa Eldred Steinkopf, plant expert at The Houseplant Guru. ‘An east or west-facing window is ideal for providing the right balance of light.’

In addition to proper lighting, this tropical plant needs a consistently warm environment. Keep it in temperatures between 65-80°F and away from cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant and cause leaf damage.

TIP #2 Keep humidity high for healthy foliage

As a tropical plant, the Dragonscale Albo thrives in high humidity levels, which help to keep its delicate leaves lush and free from browning edges. Low humidity can lead to crispy leaf tips and reduced vibrancy in the foliage.

‘Aim for a humidity level of at least 60%, but closer to 70-80% is even better,’ says Jeannie Psomas, plant expert and owner of The Plant Lady: San Francisco. ‘You can use a humidifier, mist the plant regularly, or place it near other plants to create a microclimate of higher humidity.’

Another effective method is to use a pebble tray filled with water under the plant. Just make sure the pot doesn’t sit directly in the water, as this can lead to soggy roots.

TIP #3 Water carefully to avoid root rot

The Dragonscale Albo is sensitive to overwatering, so it’s essential to strike the right balance when it comes to hydration. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is one of the most common issues with Alocasias.

‘Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out before watering again,’ says Alex Kantor, owner of Perfect Plants Nursery. ‘It’s better to underwater slightly than to overwater, as this plant is more tolerant of dry conditions than soggy soil.’

Use well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to ensure excess water can escape. During its active growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the cooler months when the plant’s growth slows down.
