Houseplant of the week: Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus

This festive favorite brings a burst of color and joy to your home during the holiday season.

Why will I love it?

The Christmas Cactus, scientifically known as Schlumbergera, will capture your heart with its stunning, vibrant blooms. Unlike traditional cacti, this plant graces your home with a cascade of flowers in shades of pink, red, white, or purple, providing a festive touch just in time for the holidays. Its unique, segmented stems and easy-care nature make it a beloved choice for both experienced and novice gardeners. The Christmas Cactus is often confused with Thanksgiving Cactus.

Light or shade?

The Christmas Cactus thrives in bright, indirect light, making it perfect for well-lit indoor spaces. While it enjoys plenty of light, be sure to keep it away from harsh direct sunlight, which can cause its leaves to burn. A spot near a north or east-facing window is ideal, offering just the right balance of light for healthy growth and blooming.

Where should I put it?

This versatile plant can be placed in a variety of indoor locations. Whether hanging in a basket, adorning a windowsill, or serving as a centerpiece on your holiday table, the Christmas Cactus adds charm and color wherever it resides. Its trailing habit makes it especially suited for elevated positions where its blooms can cascade beautifully.

How do I keep it alive?

Caring for a Christmas Cactus is relatively simple. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, taking care not to let it sit in waterlogged soil. Well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes are essential to prevent root rot. This plant prefers a slightly cooler environment, especially during the budding phase, so keep it in a room that ranges between 15-20°C (59-68°F). During the growing season, feed it with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every month to encourage robust blooms.

Did you know?

The Christmas Cactus hails from the tropical rainforests of Brazil, where it naturally grows in the nooks and crannies of trees. Unlike its desert-dwelling relatives, it thrives in humid conditions, making it a unique member of the cactus family. With its colorful blooms arriving just in time for the holidays, the Christmas Cactus is a delightful way to celebrate the season!
