Houseplant of the week: Sweet Alyssum

Sweet Alyssum

This dainty plant offers a cascade of tiny flowers and a subtle, sweet fragrance to brighten your home.

Why will I love it?

Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) is sure to steal your heart with its clusters of tiny, delicate flowers that create a lush, carpet-like display. Available in shades of white, pink, and purple, this charming plant also emits a subtle, sweet fragrance that can gently fill your space.

Light or shade?

Sweet Alyssum thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate partial shade. For the best blooms and growth, place it in a sunny spot where it can enjoy at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight each day. A bright windowsill or a location with filtered light would work wonders.

Where should I put it?

Its trailing habit makes Sweet Alyssum perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, or as a lovely accent on a shelf. Its cascading flowers add a touch of whimsy and elegance to any room. During warmer months, it can also adorn outdoor spaces, like a balcony or patio.

How do I keep it alive?

Sweet Alyssum prefers well-draining soil and should be watered regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during its growing season. However, be careful not to overwater, as it can lead to root rot. This plant enjoys cool temperatures ranging from 15-21°C (59-70°F) and appreciates moderate humidity. Fertilize sparingly, about once a month, with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to support continuous blooming.

Did you know?

Native to the Mediterranean region, Sweet Alyssum is not only a beloved ornamental plant but also a beneficial companion in gardens, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. While it’s non-toxic and safe for pets and children, it’s primarily enjoyed for its beauty and subtle scent.

Sweet Alyssum is a delightful choice for this week’s houseplant spotlight, bringing a touch of grace and fragrance to your indoor garden. Happy planting!
